Stocks Weaken After Evergrande Payment Deadline Passes

U.S. stocks opened lower as uncertainty lingered about the future of heavily indebted property giant China Evergrande Group.

The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.3%, while the S&P 500 edged down 0.4% Friday. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index weakened 0.7%. On Thursday, all three indexes rebounded, paring losses from earlier in the week.
