Several shot and injured in attack on New York subway train
A suspect remained at large in New York City on Tuesday morning following an attack on a Brooklyn subway train in which multiple people were shot and 13 were injured.
The attack occurred around 8:30am, during the morning commute, in the vicinity of the 25th Street and 36th Street stations in the Sunset Park neighbourhood in Brooklyn. The suspect was believed to have detonated a smoke grenade or other incendiary device in addition to shooting passengers.
Mobile phone video showed panicked passengers rushing out of the station as smoke and haze wafted from a train car. Photos showed victims lying on a blood-soaked platform. Several witnesses reported hearing a loud bang that preceded gun shots.
Several witnesses described the suspect as wearing a high-visibility vest and an air filtration or gas mask.
In a tweet, the New York Police Department reported that there were no longer any live explosive devices at the scene.
The White House said President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation, adding: “White House senior staff are in touch with Mayor [Eric] Adams and Police Commissioner [Keechant] Sewell to offer any assistance as needed.”
Meanwhile, several local schools were locked down. The attack occurred at a time when many New Yorkers have been on edge from a rise in shootings and violent crime.
